From which towns is it possible to commute to/from Chapel Hill within a reasonable amount of time? Is Fuquay Varina too far? Any suggestions for other towns?

Yikes! Yes too far, almost an hour. I would stick with under half an hour. Pretty much anywhere in Durham and Orange County, Mebane, Morrisville, Pittsboro, Brier Creek area of Raleigh, and no further than Cary. Maybe Apex, although that would be at least 30, if not a bit more.

Mebane is a nice affordable small town, which seems to be what you're looking for that offers a great commute to Chapel Hill.

There are bus routes from Raleigh to Chapel Hill. Not sure about Fuquay though. That's a haul...

From what point in Chapel Hill to what point in another city? Hpothetically, there is some point in Chapel Hill that can reach some point of most Triangle towns in about 30 minutes, +/- (i.e. from the closest point in the two towns). On the other hand, you could probably spend 20 minutes just making your way through Chapel Hill during rush hour if you had to drive through town to get to your commuting route.

Assuming you are commuting to UNC, Durham, Pittsboro, Hillsborough are all the easiest commutes, and have direct bus lines so you won't have to deal with parking.
