I am looking to take my homeschooled 6th grader to a museum to look at some art/artifacts from the ancient world (Egypt, Mesopotamia, etc., plus Greece and Rome). I saw the downtown raleigh museum of art has 38 Egyptian pieces. Does anyone know of any other collections in the area? We'd drive up to an hour or so if need be.

Interesting fact. . . . .
Even if you go to museums in Greece, you will not see many Greek artifacts. Many are reproductions because many of the originals are in the British Museum in London. . . . as the Greeks will be glad to tell you.
The only place I know of in NC would be the NC art museum, and you get the bonus of all those great Rodin's, etc., a wonderful greenway with art to run around in, the amazing Cloud chamber where you can talk science, etc. FYI, it is not really in downtown Raleigh anymore, but is our on Blue Ridge Rd.
This summer the Nasher Museum (at Duke) had a nice exhibit with lots of containers from antiquity. Take a look at their website to see if it is still there.
...btw, the NCMA is not downtown as the OP might have been suggesting. It's on Blue Ridge Road in west Raleigh.
