Folks,

We have been looking at property in rural Chatham and Orange county. Many of the properties have small family burial lots on them.

We have found one we really like but it has one of these small cemeteries on the front of the 13 acres visible from the front door and the drive way.

It doesn't really bother us and the rules regarding what we can and cant do with the small area are not a problem.

My concern is re-sale.

What do you guys think about it? Would it bother you? Enough not to buy the house?

Thanks for all opinions.

It would not bother me. I like the thought that there might be some history behind the property, and that family members may have chosen to be put at rest on their family land.

It will be a consideration for some folks, so resale could be affected.

It would enhance the value for us, if we were looking for a rural property. But then we love history and places with character.

Is it a deal killer? I guess it would depend on the size of the cemetary, the location of it on the property, and the condition of the cemetary itself. Is it a small, quaint, well-maintained cemetary at the edge of the property line?

If it's a very small cemetary on a larger size lot of multiple acres it would be ok. However, if it is a cemetary on a one acre lot I wouldnt even consider it. There are too many properties available that DO NOT have cemetaries on them.

Does it impact property rights? Are family members of the deceased allowed to visit the graves?

Are there empty spaces which future family member will use? In
that case, I'd pass.

We just bought two acres in the mountains that happens to have a family cemetery on the lot. It has a nice fence around it, and a separate entrance, so it doesn't bother us at all. (The view of the mountains is stunning, and more than makes up for the cemetery.) However, we will be planting something along the fence to camouflage the cemetery a bit.

Regarding the lot in question for you, the biggest question for me would be whether visitors to the cemetery would have to use your driveway.

I should also mention that I happen to like cemeteries. Plus, they make very quiet neighbors!

We bought land in Va with a small cemetery on it.
To me it adds interest as long as it isn't in the way of plans I had or very unsightly.

No one has mentioned anything about maintenance of the cemetery. Are you willing to take on the additional upkeep responsibility?
