I have been researching the Raleigh area. Have never been to NC and am planning a 50th birthday trip for my golfer husband. I know Raleigh is big, how big? We will only have 4 nites 5 days to visit. One day is for golf - so many beautiful courses, what would you strongly recommend within 1-1 1/2 hours drive from Raleigh? Golf is for him - the city is for me. We can go anywhere in NC or SC, do you have a favorite within $reason.
I am having a hard time as I know nothing except what I read on websites. How far is Raleigh from the Coast? And what part of Raleigh is best for charm and great quaint restaurants (outdoor cafe's?). Or should I pick another city in NC or SC? Come to Minnesota you get 2 choices Minneapolis or Duluth on Lake Superior. I cannot narrow it down, help get me started please. Is the end of October a good time? When do the leaves turn?

I would recommend Pinehurst or Charleston, SC. Each will have more as far as sight seeing. For 1 round of golf either (as well as Raleigh) will ahve plenty of options. Pinehurst is ~1.25 hours from RDU airport. I don't know the best option for flying into Charleston. It is probably 5 hours from RDU.

Pinehurst, I know I have certainly heard of it. Is it an actual city or is that just the name of the golf course/golf course area? Is the end of October a bad time? How far is Pinehurst from the mountains?

Thank you much.

Pinehurst is the name of the village and the golf course. I suggest looking through this site, as it should answer all of your questions:
