I have a friend who teaches 2nd grade. She lost her Assistant and she says she now expects to spend between 8-9 hours at school every day PLUS take some work home.
I'm just hoping the parents in our school district will rally and do a lot of volunteering to help our teacher be as successful as possible.
Reading the article, it said that no teacher's assistants had to lose their jobs. All they did was eliminate unfulfilled vacant positions. Looks like they are attributing it to the teacher raises...
"The 22 percent reduction in state funding for teacher assistants, roughly $800,000, led the district to cut 22 teacher assistant positions. There were vacant positions, so no employees will have to be let go. "
That is true but if you are a 2nd grade teacher who is used to sharing an assistant with only one other teacher now you have to share with 3 other teachers. And some of those vacant positions only became vacant at the end of the school year. I'm glad nobody "lost a job" but I know for a fact many left in the middle of the school year because of poor pay and no raises and better opportunities. Or they just retired or gave up.
that's not what the article says though. and maybe you mis-typed, but in the original post you said "lost her assistant" and now it's that she went from a 1/2 assistant to a 1/4.
I do agree that at that level, a 1/2 assistant is more appropriate.
I'm surprised they have any teacher's assistants in 4th and 5th grade.

She also had a very devoted parent volunteer who was there 3 or 4 days a week. She is aware how lucky she was last year and wonders if somebody else will be as generous this year. I think one of the reasons our district is so highly regarded and has such success is because of the extraordinary parental involvement.
Serious question. What do teacher assistants in elementary school do? What do parent volunteers do? I only ask because where I went to school in NJ back in the early 8o's it was just me along w/ 20-25 other kids and the teacher. All day every day. And this was in a district that was well regarded. So the idea of assistants and volunteers is a foreign concept to me and I have no idea what duties they fulfill. Thanks!
The alternative is to raise taxes. Money has to come from somewhere.
Funny you should mention that. Some of us are paying more taxes. Starting July 1, we now pay 7% sales tax on natural gas. Thanks NC GOP! Bought a concert ticket the other day, 7% sales tax. Thanks NC GOP! Small business tax deduction, gone! Thanks NC GOP. Increased vehicle registration fee! Steal us blind and still no money for education.
