So, I m trying to wrap my brain around the year-round school system out there.

Of the 15days per quarter that the kids are out of school, where do they go? If I had them in after school care, would those establishments accommodate them?

Those of you that are in it, do you like it?
What are the pros & cons?

Thanks!!

FYI, it is more commonly called "year round" vs "multi track". For my family and my kids, we love it. Tons of options during trackout for camps...ymca, ice skating, sports camps, etc. My own personal opinion is that the kids and teachers do better with 9 weeks on and then 3 weeks off. If you do a search, there are lots of threads on year-round.

We love it. My kids are on Track 1, which works best for our family in regards to vacation and travel. It's nice for them to have smaller breaks than to have an entire summer off. My kids would be bored to death. Right now, I'm a student and when I'm home, they're with me. We take day trips at least once a week...it's nice to go to the zoo on a Tuesday morning when the weather is nice and it's not crowded! Next semester, I'll have more classes and plan on sending them to a track out camp...probably at the YMCA or a local church. There are an awful lot of track out programs, I believe Carolina Parent has a list of them.

Works for some, not for others. We hated it. What I really like is the idea of year round, single track schools, which has happened in some of the underenrolled year round schools. that way, all the kids are on one track, and it's the most like traditional--there's a month off in July, and breaks in October and March (when there's usually easter/spring break). We got bounced around a lot due to underenrollment in our school. And when you've only got one class on each track, you spend your elementary years with one group of kids--which can be good, but it also means that if you get moved, your child knows no one. Also, all of our neighbors were on different tracks, so in the summertime, when kids usually stay up a little later and play with friends and have sleepovers, well, that just isn't going to happen. All in all, I'm really happy to be DONE with that!

My son is at a single track school, track 4. When they track out (break) the YMCA actually runs a camp at his school,so it's a great set up for working parents. So far, I'm loving year round school as we are a family who travels a lot.
