I'm from Jersey (Somerset County) too. We have a child who is on the spectrum but has other impairments also. Around here TEACCH is considered the gold-standard as far as diagnosis. You may want to do a search on the topic, it's certainly been discussed here not too long ago in a lenghty thread or two with resources.
Personally, we opted out of TEACCH, as did quite a few families we know who came here already with the diagnosis. I wasn't convinced they could do any more for us.
Since this post was moved to the Raliegh forum, the previous postings I was referring to are actually in the general North Carolina forum. My personal experience with autism resources and TEACCH is in the Charlotte area, where we now reside.
TEACCH has multiple regional centers around the state.
Hi! Im from Somerset County...North Plainfield to be exact. Moved here from Hudson County.
How long have you been in NC? .... We do have two diagnosis. One from Children Specialized (NJ) and one from Columbia Presbyterian (NY) because at that point my now 3 yr old started showing delays and I started freaking out.
He is only in speech therapy now because of articulation (pronunciation of words) .. My older one was diagnosed just the same so we have two diagnosis.
About the school district - we only have one aunt my husband side who has been there for over 20 years .. moved from upstate NY back then. We have visited Raleigh every year for 10 yrs now.
How is your school district working with you and your child?
We're actually just finished the 6 session parent/child "program" TEACCH offers with our oldest son. While some of the information was good, I can't say it was worth the wait and definitely isn't the end-all-be-all that some people believe. My wife is a pediatric occupational therapist, so a lot of the information they gave us was redundant, but they were nice and tried to help.
