We are moving to Pittsboro and will need to buy kitchen appliances pretty soon after the move. Can anyone recommend a good place to look?

H H Gregg. The more you buy, the bigger the discount you can negotiate.

There is a large, friendly, Lowes home improvements store right in Pittsboro.

HH Gregg was excellent, we bought some new appliances in the Apex store and are very happy. Michael was the guy who helped us, he was very knowledgeable and happy to help. In the future, we will be using HH Gregg again.

I've bought several appliances over the years from Lowe's and been very satisfied. I don't think I ever got a superb bargain, because when you need a fridge, you need it in a hurry, but they've had the best overall prices and the service is good.

The advantage there is you could pick out what you want now, and even purchase it before you move if it is on sale, and arrange for delivery in advance.

I did go into HH Gregg recently, very nice people and decent prices, they just didn't have the model I needed.

Sandy - I guess it depends on your requirements. If you want a perfect appliance, then the usual suspects are available. However, if you can deal with a bump and/or a ding or two, Sears has an outlet store that sells appliances for 40-60% off the retail price.

My wife and I shopped there and just about bought a Samsung refrigerator, normally $2200 for $1200. We were ready to purchase, but the kind salesman told us the quality of the Samsung appliances was not good and they were the only manufacturer who did not offer a warranty on refurb'd or damaged appliances.

We ended up getting a refrigerator from HH Gregg and included the warranty.

In our case, HH Gregg also price matched without any questions asked. We told them we saw a similar appliance at another store for a certain price and he matched it.

It would be a drive for you, but we have found the Sears discount outlet in Garner (in the old KMart building) to be excellent. We got a new refrigerator for $400 from there in March. Prices are excellent if you are ok with a tiny scratch on a panel that won't even be seen.

We bought a refrigerator and washer-dryer recently and these were our findings (which might differ depending on exact location of store) :

We looked at Sears (but not refurbished or dinged appliances), HH Greg, Lowes, Best Buy and Home-Depot.

We found prices to be near identical for most products across the stores and almost all were willing to do price match (HH Greg and Best Buy more so)

Some specific products (in our case a refrigerator) were available at "special discounted price" only in specific stores. And once the price difference was over a couple of hundred it was harder (at least for us) to get a price match.

We got the most detailed knowledge/information and feedback at HH Greg and (slightly lesser extent but still better than other stores) at Best-Buy. At Lowe's and Home Depot in particular the staff seemed to know significantly less about the pros and cons about appliances and in general it was hard to get hands on help.

We were interested in purchasing extended warranties and we found that HHG had the most expensive warranties (significantly so, almost a couple hundred extra across 3 appliances), home-depot was cheapest and Lowes and Best-Buy slightly more than HDepot. We ended up buying at Lowes since one of the lower cost of warranties plus a special they had on a specific appliance helped give us the lowest total there. Delivery was free (HHG costs either $50 or $100 but they send you a gift card in the mail) and quick.

HHGreg had significantly more in store stock than any of the other stores.

For narrowing down on specific models after initial store feedback from staff, online reviews were great (Google seems to aggregate ratings/reviews across sites now. And HHG/best-buy websites allow searching/sorting for/on various categories, for example is reviewers found a particular appliance noisy or the ice-maker slow etc)

Hope this is helpful

Am not the OP but quick question do warranties still apply for such appliances?

I found the best prices for appliances at Sears online during holiday sales. Labor day sales aren't too far off. Sales price + coupon/promotion (like free shipping) + shop your way points + bonus syw point coupons + ebates or similar + some % back for using a Sears card. Then roll the points you earn on one appliance into another. I was able to pick a date for delivery. Pick the models you want and start tracking sales prices so you can see when a real discount comes up.
