I should also say that we are conservative more than liberal. However, we lived for several years in one of the most liberal cities in the US, and didn't have one single McCain lawn sign within dozens of city blocks....but we had some of the best friends we've ever had in that town. We didn't dislike each other because we had differences. Ignorant people
are everywhere, and you just need to smile, walk away and think....sucks to be them....they are the ones missing out on a potentially happy life, full of flavor. I didn't get the vibe that the majority of the folks in Cary fell into the Ignorant category.

If you go to the City Data main page, you can look at the stats. Chapel Hill is one of the LEAST diverse places in the Triangle. Cary is even more diverse. Chapel Hill is one of the furthest from politically centered as you can find here. It's not representative of the overall population here. You will find yourself having to leave Chapel Hill to shop at familiar places, because they are very restrictive.

Not that Chapel Hill is bad at all, but are you sure you want to live in such a place?

People, people! Clearly the OP went to both the gas station and the pizza place and saw people both taking pennies, and leaving pennies at the register area, and that dangerous act of socialism (which ranks right up there with communism, fascism, and first degree murder according to Rush Limbaugh) propably rocked their world, and left them reeling and wondering how long it was going to take the town of Cary to send a lazy overpaid government employee (with a fat and undeserved pension plan ), to sneak over in the middle of the night, walk right through their unlocked front door and spread their wealth, leaving them a broken down, torn apart, socialistic shell of their former family.

I mean, who would want to subject their kids to THAT?!

I will say that in the year that I have lived here I have witnessed some interactions that make me think that among some individuals there is a level of racial/socio-economic tension that I have not experienced in other areas I've lived (Austin, Dallas, Pittsburgh). I haven't seen anything overt, but I have occasionally felt some tension in the air that was seemingly based on preconceived notions since the people obviously didn't know each other. I'm not saying that it is prevalent here or that it was completely nonexistent in TX or PA, but I have noticed it more here. It may be that Raleigh is more racially and economically integrated geographically (just based on my observation, not on any demographic data) than anywhere else I have lived, so there is a lot more interaction.

That being said, I have no idea how you witness socialism at a gas station or a pizza joint, and I always lock my car whether I'm parking at country club or a homeless shelter.

This has to be one of the most bizarre threads I've read in quite some time!

So, you want an area filled with "transients?" Isn't this the term used for homeless people?

Socialism? Yeah, because places such as Sweden and Denmark are so scary. Imagine the horrors the children "witness."

You won't find rampant racism in Chapel Hill (or Cary for that matter) unless it's in your own home.

Yes, and moreover, this is the funniest city-data thread I've read in a very long time. Thank you very much, writemrsc, for providing so much unintentional hilarity to this forum. It has put a wry, bewildered smile on my face. Keep up the good work!

You haven't seen the roving bands of socialists that give away slices of pizza and gasoline in Cary?

I don't lock my car, but that's because I keep hoping someone will steal it so I have an excuse to get a car worth more than $2000. So far my cunning plan hasn't worked.

We will relocate from a Dallas suburb in about three months.

Thanks!
writemrsc - I just want to chime in to say welcome to the Triangle. I sincerely hope you and your family have a nice, safe move and that you enjoy your time here.

I see that you are originally from New England. I would suggest you add Holly Springs to your list of possible places to research. I have met quite a few folks who relocated to HS from Boston - I believe many were a result of the Fidelity relos. Lots of transplants (perm and temp). Very family friendly with good schools. Can't really speak to whether most folks in HS tune into Hannity or Maddow - but I can say, folks I've met are quite friendly.

Good luck in your search.
