My partner and I wish to work with a friendly realtor in this area. Any recommendations from y'all?

I agree with NRG. My partner and I went through an online service to get pre-approved on a loan. The representative gave me a list of realtors' names based on prior performace ratings(before I realized city-data existed). I asked for a gay friendly realtor and she told me it should be a non issue due to fair housing laws. She also told me if I had any problems, email her and they would take the realtor off of their preferred list. My realtor was awesome! He focused on our needs and treated us with a huge amount of respect and attentiveness. I also didn't even think of asking how the deed should be drawn up, but the lawyer was on top of it as well.

When was the Fair Housing Act amended to include sexual orientation as a protected class? I was unaware of the inclusion.

On a national level, it does not include sexual orientation. Some states have included it on the local level. HRC | Discrimination in Housing (broken link) Right now, NC is not one of those states. In my case, I had an extremely positive experience with my realtor and closing attorney.

I stand corrected with regard to the content of the fair housing act, but I still believe you will find your orientation a non-issue for any self respecting RE Agent. Agents get a lot of work from referrals and like in danadana's post, I imagine many people would not be interested in being associated with or referring RE Agents who discriminate against people whether it is based on race, religion, or orientation regardless if there is a law prohibiting it or not.

Since I have only recently moved back here after 16 years in Chicago (now that is a gay/lesbian friendly city), I cannot offer any recommendations myself.
Good Luck and welcome to the south.

Many have answered the legality of your question, and I stand behind that. I think what you were really asking was "has anyone who is gay worked with a realtor that they liked, did a good job, and didn't have a personal problem working with clients who are gay." I think it is a legitimate question. Will almost every every realtor you call say they don't have a problem, most likely. But, does that answer your question, no not really!
Hopefully some people from the board with PM you or share their personal stories with you and that will help you make the decision. There are definitely some very good agents who frequent this board, and they have always been helpful when I have had questions for them!
Good luck!

Well, speaking only my opinions on what the original poster was asking, I can see where she is coming from. I'm gay too and I would have probably picked a realtor based on opinions from other gay & lesbian individuals too. Its just nice to know of someone who is familar with the area who can say, "Up the road they have GLBT coffee meetings" or "theres a gay friendly bar in this location", etc.
Not necessarily looking for a gay realtor, just someone who can offer up some advice/opinions on the local area. That's all.
Of course if any realtor can offer up that kind of opinion/advice, then that is just fabulous in my book!

Oh, but back to the original post, I think it was answered on another thread. Moderator cut: Direct message member for their recommindation I know someone who comes highly recommended by the GLBT boards.
Whoops, if the name gets edited, just PM me and I will pass on the info. Not sure if that was allowed or not.
