I'm always amazed at how much we spend on a Christmas tree each year. I remember them being cheaper back in Massachusetts/New Hampshire--like $35 for a 6-7 footer. I might be wrong, of course, and we moved 6 years ago, so prices have likely gone up anyway.
But, in your experience, what do you pay for a nice 6-7 footer? I just saw some nice ones at Whole Foods for $50; we almost always buy ours from Trosa, but I think we end up paying $50 for a 5-6 footer. It seems the going rate is $10/ft (except for those I saw at WF).
The least expensive live trees are usually at the grocery stores like Food Lion. Typically one size fits all at one price. The big box hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowes also have good pricing and a size and type selection. The last two years we thought the Lowes in NW Raleigh had a far better selection than Home Depot.
Seems like in the past you could get a 6-7' frazier fir for $30-35 ... Lowes ad copy below, with a link to the entire menu here:
Sounds about right, 40-50 bucks, depening on the species (Douglas fir or Balsam Fir). I don't personally remember trees ever costing much less than that, even before moving here.
I do think the Farmer's Market is known to be cheaper than many places; it's hard to say what we "typically" pay because some years, it's higher than others (yes, I do recall seeing one year actually be LOWER than the previous for a similar size--we get a big one, about 10-12', and I think it's been around $90 recently). We usually get them from the Boy Scouts, but I think they only have one weekend they do it.
In the past, we've used Home Depot to get a Christmas tree. Typically around $40 for an 8 footer.
We've also used "Jordan Lake Christmas Tree Farm" down by, you guessed it, Jordan Lake. You can either chop it yourself or bring a tag up front and have them chop it down for you. It's a pretty fun experience, and you pay $4.50/ft. They also have Frasier Firs that are shipped in if you want those. It looks like they said their selection this year won't be as good as in years past.
