We do have money set aside for a house. We sold ours in Philly when we moved here. It's a nice down payment. That's not the issue.

I know how you feel. We moved here for work and less than a year later, the entire company--boom--was gone. I think we may feel a little like depression-era people felt. The kind of fear that had them, decades later, shaking their hands at their grandkids' wastefulness and rinsing aluminum foil to use again.
We were able to make things work and kept our house, etc. I think my recommendation would be to buy well under what you can afford, and to figure on updating/adding on with cash when you can. And buy one of the smaller models in the nicest neighborhood you can afford.
