I've had to do this a couple of times. One suggestion, don't be afraid to ask for a better deal. I've found agencies have a lot of latitude in this area.
Also, ask how much for an upgrade when you go to pick up the car. You can often get great deals if the rental agency has an overstock of the higher model and see an easy way to increase their profit (win/win for you and the rental company). Sometimes they'll even give a free upgrade and write it off as an easy way to please a customer and hopefully gain loyalty.
I'm not a haggler by nature and don't really enjoy it. I merely ask, and then make a decision after hearing if there are any other deals.
