Strangest thing since moving here from California....just like water, there is a shortage of sourdough bread. Not all grocery stores have it - its kinda an adventure to find it. I guess its not that popular out here??

Lowes Foods also has sourdough bread. I'm sure Panera Bread will have some, too - as well as Fresh Market, Whole Foods, etc.

You could also get a starter and bake your own. Nothing better than homemade bread!

I bet the Great Harvest Bread Company in Chapel Hill sells it too.

I actually had some Sourdough and Honey baked bread from Wal Mart and I was honestly surprised at how good it was and I LOVE bread. Fresh made too.

If you head to this part of the Triangle, Weaver St. Market, The Weaver Street Market Cooperative, and Gugelhupf in Durham have excellent sourdough breads (and lots of other good bakery items).

Brentwoodboy, stay away from the grocery store sourdough. It's not any where near what you got on the west coast. Follow Alice's advice above. Thus far these have been the only places that are comparable. The folks at Gugelhupf are really great. One of the bakers is from So Ca. They also do a great lunch.

Fresh Market & Panera. Panera's sourdough baguette is top notch.

Harris Teeter sometimes sells out each batch almost as soon as it's baked. They will then bake more at my store if you ask.
