I noticed merging onto 40 from 147 wasn't a headache yesterday evening. I don't know if that was because I left a tad earlier than usual or because of the Expressway though.
Driving over NC147 on my morning commute along I-40E a little after 8 this morning, I saw zero cars on 147 south of I-40 travelling in either direction. Just a momentary sampling, of course, but it suggests the new road wasn't inundated its first full day of operation.

It was plenty backed up when I went through around 5:30pm - looked unchanged to me.
I was told the minimum they can charge you is $5/month if you don't have a transponder but you use the toll road. For example if you use the toll road one time the whole month for 2 miles you can't pay 48 cents.
What fees can I expect from my NC Quick Pass account?
The following table shows the fees that may be applied to your account and are subject to change at any time:
Inactive account fee (If no toll usage for 12 months) $1/month
Quarterly mailed statement fee $5/statement
Returned check fee $25/check
Tolls charged through license plate identification due to no transponder read, if the plate toll transactions exceed 15% per month. $5/month
Had dinner with my wife at MEZ after work last night and we tested out her commute home times using the new Davis/Hopson exit right by her work.
Her normal drive time from downtown Durham to Cornwallis/TW Alexander/etc. to her office: 23-24 minutes
Drive time via Toll NC 147 exit 3 to downtown Durham: 16 minutes
Definitely going to be the new route.
There were more cars than I would have expected for a brand new road at 5pm the day after it opened -- about as much traffic as you usually see on the northwest extension of NC 147 between 15/501 and I-85 SB ramp. Oh, and a State Trooper out to ... what? ... look for speeders on a still fairly empty road?
My guess is things will stay fairly quiet on Toll 147 until next fall when the Western Wake opens.

I think it's ridiculous that they're going to charge a $5 fee for mailing the statement. That's BS! You should be able to go online and access your account for free & pay it online.

You know that's a good question and one not addressed in their FAQ section. So I emailed them about it. Doubt I will get an answer until Monday but once I do get one I'll let everyone here know the answer.

No, you are not forced to get a statement. Monthly e-statement accessible online and via email is free. There is only a charge if you want a statement mailed.
