This is not really correct.

1) No part of I-540 or NC-540 is currently tolled.
2) No part of I-540 is going to be tolled
3) The portion of NC 540 from I-40 (where the road changes from I-540) to NC 54 will not be tolled.
4) NC 540 will be tolled south of the NC 54 exit starting next summer when the new segment is added.

Hopefully with this new road and the 40 expansion around Wade things are looking up for getting to the RBC Center.
Yeah, I suspect at times there is a backup, taking Toll 147 south to NC 540 north to I-40 will avoid most of the pain, albeit adding a couple of miles and some tolls to your day.

Good explanation. Also, it appears NCDOT has signed everything west of 147 on NC-540 as NC-540 South as opposed to NC-540 West. This makes sense as the road will primarily head south, paralleling NC-55 (which is marked as NC-55 East....go figure)

55 runs between Durham and Oriental, nearly 200 miles. Overall it's more east-west than north-south. Only the portion in Durham and Wake counties is oriented mainly north-south.
