I'm taking an overnight (8 pm to 5 am) bus from Chinatown in NYC to Raleigh a couple days before Xmas to visit my girlfriend's family. It's an "I-95 Coach" (a company on which I can find no information), and the ticket was only $40. Has anyone done this before? Am I going to die? Is this bus even going to show up? Any info or experiences would be appreciated...
(I'd never take it, but that's just me. I took an unregistered Chinatown taxi ride from Manhattan to JFK earlier this year, and I thought I was gonna die. Seriously. He got me there at 1/3 the normal amount of time [at 4 am], going 90 mph on 55 mph streets; my daughter's great idea. Mainstream transportation is safer.)
I am guessing it won't be the most pleasant ride you've ever had, and the reliability will be less than 100%, but OTOH, these groups do a lot of business. Have a "Plan B" mapped out, however!
After the Sky Express got shut down they tried operating under a different name before getting in trouble doing that. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same people operating "I-95 Coach".

It sounds like you're right! Time for someone to do an investigation. Sounds like they don't follow the laws, and they stay open when they've been ordered closed down. More people are likely to die.
Don't be surprised if you get shanghaied and have to work in a Chinese restaurant for a few years to pay off the snakehead gangs like all the Chinese illegal immigrants who will be riding with you.
I've ridden the Chinatown bus before. Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeever again. Not worth the trouble. Megabus is a much better experience and if you buy the tickets far enough in advance can be absurdly cheap
I recommend Megasbus. You can catch the coach to DC, and then transfer to a bus to New York. If you go on off-peak days, you can get a round trip ticket for less than $40.
