We hear celebratory gun shots around Christmas, New Year's, and 4th of July. I don't think this campaign is going to be super successful but I'm glad they're trying.
LOL. I know. I think they should pay more attention to the horizontal ones. I don't think many people are out in our streets shooting bullets in the air in celebration.
Seeing as I can't find a single case of someone dying as a result of celebratory gunfire in Durham in the past decade, then yeah, I don't think it's as big of a problem in Durham as other crimes.
I'm glad to see this campaign. There's a lot of celebratory gunfire in my neck of Durham. I was used to it in Baltimore and NJ on New Years and the 4th. However, Durham is actually much worse. In Baltimore, they'd shoot in the air for about 5-7 minutes after midnight. Here they shoot on and on and on well past midnight. They also shoot in the air when there isn't a holiday.
Like dcgirl said, I think it's a good effort, but doubt the effectiveness of it.
That wiki link was interesting. I never thought of it as a "cultural practice".
I think its great. Maybe after New Years, lets have some more.
Have fun, don't hold exploding fireworks in your hand.
Have fun, don't lie down in traffic.
Have fun, don't jump a fence to pet the pit bulls.
Have fun, but don't worry about common sense. We'll tell you when what you're doing is just plain stupid.
