we did the option 1 trip..took us exactly 10 hours on the way up (with gas stops) and around 11 on the way back (longer stops and an accident on 77).

friends of ours went up through DC, hit a ton of traffic and they ended up with ~13 hours worth of driving time. We left 3 hours later than them, and arrived around the same time.

I'm late to the party, but we've done the back and forth between RDU and WNY too many times to count, just about any way you can, with every angle of attack, 15, 17, 19, 77, 79, 81, 95, 85, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and on and on... My advice is to always stick to Interstates if there's a chance of bad weather. Interstates are wider, safer, more frequently traveled and plowed, and all around a better place for rescue if needed. US-15 gets better and better up through Central PA as they work on completing the new I-99 corridor.

Also, I know the perfect diversion around DC traffic if anyone needs it.

We did the I-79 route too. I briefly considered taking 77 up to Cleveland, but didn't do it. We hit that accident on 77 Friday morning, but it was early enough that we got right by.

Coming back yesterday was not as nice because of the snow storm in Pennsylvania, but still a decent trip. There was a ton of traffic (all NC plates!) coming down I-77 from Beckley to I-74. Kind of funny -- everyone is going back to NC after being home for the holidays. Luckily most of them went to Charlotte and I-74 was a breeze.

Snow? Western New York!? What's this world coming too!!

All kidding aside, we drive back on the 6th for a weekend, the snow better be gone, including that terrible stretch on 1-79 between Pittsburgh and Erie I hate so much.

You're right, that was easily the worst stretch of the snow.

We returned from Buffalo yesterday (Wed the 28th). Decided on trying the DC route due to the predicted snow on I-90 along the lake and 79 thru PA. So we did 90-63-390-15-270-495. Snow ended at 390 in Geneseo however traffic on 495 was bad and also 95 south of DC looked like a parking lot according to the iphone. So we stayed on 495 and got off on 210 and made our way over to 301 (southeast DC). Took rt 207 and rejoined 95 north of Richmond. I have no idea if this was faster then sitting on 95 south of DC. The trip took 11.5 hours overall. We usually plan on 11 hours.

Jimmy what is your DC diversion? 17 to 81?

Used option 1 when we moved here. We usually fly when we go to visit.

haha I hear ya... I expect snow when visiting in the winter time. The lack of it just makes travelling so much easier. Especially considering that the family members we visit when we are up live 1.5 hours away from each other, so we are constantly driving.

When travelling from Atlanta to Toronto we take 85 to 440 to 77 to US 19 to 79 to 90 to the border.

I plan on taking a similar route when I'm in Raleigh. It takes about 14 hours from Atlanta so I'm guestimating it will be about 10-12 hours from RAL area.
