I can see why you decided to remodel haha. How did the cabinet prices compare to the stuff you see at the big box stores?

BCR - Lovely job!

Can I ask, what is the floor product - type and color? And, did you have to scrape paint off the trim and window? One last question....is the paint eggshell?

Thanks! Flooring: it's oak hardwood but I don't recall the brand (contractor selection) or stain. I believe we did flat paint throughout.

In re cabinets, we had done our last house with cabinets from Lowe's and assumed that if we had gone with one of their higher-end lines it would have run $11k to $13k for cabinets. Ferguson (sort of a high-end big box store) and an independent kitchen designer both quoted us semi-custom cabinets from brands like Omega, Diamond, etc. in the $15k to $18k range. We were surprised to find that a local company would do fully custom cabinets (complete with CAD mark-up and everything) for $19,500 installed. They manufactured everything here in Durham with full hardwoods except the doors, which are MDF and procured from a third party.

We're really happy we did custom, as we were able to do thinks like matching the balusters from the 1920s built-in (which themselves match the staircase) to the sink-base, etc. Can't see the point in going semi-custom from some out-of-state big factory when they could be produced nicely, locally. I suspect the state of the economy had something to with pricing.

Based on that experience, if we were doing it over, I'd either go back to custom (CKS was our company) or would go the Lowe's/HD route -- can't see any value in the high-end semi-customs. In fact, our next project is building an alleyway garage with apartment to rent above, and we'll certainly do big-box for the kitchen cabinets there.

We did end up using Ferguson for the appliances and were very happy with them.

I adore that sink!

I'm not a fan of granite but it wouldn't disqualify a house for me unless it was black granite. I can't abide the sight of black granite.
