We're looking for houses in Cary and we have 4 dogs, and I had an agent tell me we could only have 2 dogs in Cary. I knew this wasn't true. So I checked.
The Town of Cary does not have a limit on how many dogs you have per house hold as long as they are not a nuisance.
I obtained this information directly from the Cary animal control folks via email on December 29, 2011. (For Google's sake!)
This seems to be a common misconception.
That said, check with the HOA as they may have rules.

I wish they'd put a limit on yappy dogs. My neighbors across the street from me have what sounds like a pack of dogs that bark non-stop inside their house. I don't know how they don't go crazy from all the barking!

All true. Cary used to have a two-dog limit, but they did away with that a decade ago. That real estate agent needs to catch up!

This type of problem isn't solved by a numbered limit.
Perhaps you should 1. talk with your neighbor and/or 2. call the authorities.
Number of dog limits simply keep dogs in shelters where they don't belong.

Well I was joking but I have done both #1 and #2. Neighbors are jerks, so #1 solved nothing. Dogs are inside the house, so #2 solved nothing. I'll just have to hope they move sometime soon

Gotcha, sorry. There are people that think limiting the number of dogs helps such problems.
I'm surprised #2 didn't work out for you.

Yeah apparently the dogs aren't loud "enough" according to Cary PD and since they're inside the house then they're not being neglected or abused in their eyes (which I agree with; they're just annoying snots that seem to be getting fed plenty). At least for us we can only really hear them when we're outside or our windows are open. I can't even imagine being their next door neighbors and having to listen to that 24/7. I'd probably go postal at some point.

I have four dogs. Actually, my wife has three. Our daughter moved back home with her dog, so now there are four.
No need for guns or a burglar alarm in our house.

Four dogs? We do. It's sort of a long and complicated situation, and believe me I swear every day that I wish we didn't. But we do, and they are staying. Two are quite elderly, and while I don't wish them dead, it will be a relief to be down in numbers.

I don't understand why anyone would want that many dogs but to each his own. I hope you have them well-trained so they don't annoy your neighbors. Personally speaking, I don't envy you for having to clean up after so many dogs. Ick.
