My mother-in-law is in the hospital in Myrtle Beach, SC. I am planning on traveling down there this weekend to visit her and help my husband take care of some things around her house.
Understanding that this is a holiday weekend, traffic will probably be pretty bad with folks heading down to the beach. And, I have to work today until 5.
I live near Cameron Village in Raleigh, and when I made this trip last weekend, I took 40 to 95. There was a bit of a backup where 40 and 440 split, but it wasn't bad. I'm anticipating that this will be worse today with holiday traffic.
Can anyone tell me what kind of backup I can expect? Or even better, I'd love to know your recommendations for an alternate route.
You might consider taking NC Highway 50, Benson Road, South out of Garner and popping over to 40 at McGee's Crossroads.
But...I'm famous for my "long shortcuts."

Thanks, Mike. I don't mind if the mileage is longer if there is less traffic and sitting still.
I'm still new to Raleigh. How do I pick up Highway 50? And... dumb question... but is everything clearly marked?

You would go south on Saunders Street, and all the way to Garner, bearing left at the 70/401 split in south Raleigh.
Into Garner on 70, and there is an exit ramp for Hwy 50/Benson Road.
Right at the top of the ramp and it is a straight shot to McGee's Crossroads. Maybe 15-18 miles?
Left at the signal in McGee's Crossroads, and it is less than 1/2 mile to I-40 again. Puts you back on at Exit 319, IIRC.
If the traffic isn't too bad, it is a pretty drive.
I just wanted to thank you again for these directions. I used them on Friday and they were great!
Most Excellent! Thanks for the feedback. I always worry when giving directions.
