Check the local knitting shops...Durham has Cozy (also sell kitchy stuff), Hillsborough has the Hillsborough yarn shop (very great selection & nice ladies), and Chapel Hill has Yarns Etc (there are always ladies knitting away in this store, class or not). Most of them will have classes for either. And welcome to the club..have you checked out Ravelry? It's a great site for lots of free patterns and knittinghelp.com is a great site for knitting help.

I took a knitting class at Cozy's a few years back. Loved the teacher... super supportive. Ended up not liking knitting. But Cozy's is a nice little shop.

Yarns Etc.
I had remembered them being on Main Street in Carrboro (my wife knits), but checking their website it seems they might have moved to Chapel Hill.

Timely question as I am teaching my 9 year old daughters how to knit. One is doing great the other is a hot mess. I kept saying, they need to watch somebody other than myself to get a better idea so I will check out the shop in Chapel Hill.
Knitting is a wonderful hobby. I learned as a young girl and have been knitting off and on for many years.

As far as I know, the folks that run Yarns Etc. in CH also own Great Yarns in Raleigh. (Each is conveniently located beside the local Whole Foods.)

Try meetup.com as well. I am relocating to the area so I was looking out there to see what kind of groups were in the area and noticed a couple of knitting/crocheting groups.
