Thank you, folks, for all the suggestions and links. Highly appreciated!!
Another thought, could you board the dog with a local vet or local boarding facility. I'm not sure if it would be more expensive or less in the long run. Just another option to consider.
Edit: By local I meant a boarder here in the Triangle.
We have had to learn about pet-friendly hotels since we got a small dog back in 2002.
A few notes:
LaQuinta Inns ALWAYS allow pets. No fees, or restrictions.
Red Roof Inns allow pets, but most of them put pets in smoking rooms, only. That can be a problem if you are sensitive to smoking residue.
Almost all the Marriott hotels have pet policies, usually involving a "cleaning fee" Residence Inn charges $125 one time fee.
Holiday Inns usually allow pets, while Holiday Inn Express seldom do.
Many Super 8 hotels allow pets, and few charge fees.
Ramada usually charges fees.
I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Durham - RTP area (South Miami Boulevard) and it was very nice. Great breakfast, too. They charge a fee though, so I'd probably go to LaQuinta the next time I stay over in the area. There's a LaQuinta on 15/501 bet. Durham and Chapel Hill and one somewhere in RTP.
