Yep for this area Ecko is your best bet, along with Nowell's. Dont know of any other semi reasonable modern stores in the area, if anyone else does all ears.
Check out Crate and Barrel also. They have a huge showroom at Southpoint. I don't know a lot about modern, but we were there last night and I did recognize a ton of great looking mid-century modern pieces. You can look at their website first to see if it's what you like.
Ambiente has a huge store and decent prices. Ecko store is small, so selection is limited but the prices are the most reasonable out of these three. Nowell I found to be my least favorite since prices are unaffordably high. This is from my experience shopping and buying from Ambiente and Ecko.
Ecko is modern, but the quality is not high generally. It is more like Ikea, inexpensive and will look great for a while. Nowell's is the longstanding furniture store that has mostly modern. You can find a range of options there too, from high end to affordable. Although I have a modern house and modern furniture, I am not a huge Ambiente fan. I have found much of their stuff to be WAY high for what it is, and a little too cutesy modern for my taste (lots of strange angles and cute shapes...) and I have also found their staff to have QUITE the attitude, like they are way cooler than you.
There have been some great modern stores here, including Danco (all Danish modern...have some incredible pieces from them....miss them badly) and Cherry, run by Louis Cherry one of the best contemporary architects in the area. It is possible that he is still selling online...Yep...he is: Our Vendors
But I must admit, I just tend to shop for modern whenever I travel to DC or Chicago....more selection.
I have also had great luck buying pieces at local auction houses. Mostly Leland Little in Hillsborough. Way cheaper than buying new and vintage pieces made with real wood rather than veneer like most of the furniture made today.
