That compares to evidence of the opposite effect when a Wal-Mart moves in and nearby grocery stores reduce their prices to compete."
Why would that be ?

That was the most interesting point.

Apex also expects tax value to increase dramatically with development of the vacant land, but that is a pretty obvious expectation.

I can't read the above referenced article either, but I did find a couple (older) articles that discuss the effect grocery prices when Costco enters the market.

I hear ya, I was hoping they would start early 2014, so I would not have to renew my BJ's membership next September. Oh well...

Who put the "Freak" in "Freakonomics?"

Quote 1:
"Their new study shows that a Costco store increases competitors’ grocery prices..."

Quote 2:
"By focusing on less-price sensitive customers, incumbents are able to sneak in some price hikes without affecting sales."

Quote 1 implies that Costco sets the prices in other stores, while Quote 2, from the same paragraph implies that existing stores set their own prices.

"Monty! Monty! Monty! I'll take Door #2!"

Good writers should have caught this one and a good editor would have never let it pass.

"Hate" is such an over-used term.

Actually, Freak Quote #1 belies their political slant. Freudian, ya know?
