New House MLS listing says: City:Raleigh County: Durham

So...I didn't know there was a city of Raleigh in the County of Durham...

This was for homes listed in the Regency Collection at Brier Creek - a Toll Bros development.

how does this work? Is it Raleigh or Durham? What would the schools be?

Just curious...

There are some Raleigh addresses over the Durham County line, and I believe there are also some Durham addresses in Wake County. It probably is not within the Raleigh city limits, but a Raleigh address.

I have a friend who lives literally feet across the Durham County line and has a Raleigh address. It's not that unusual.

As previous posters have said, there are parts of The City Of Raleigh that extend into Durham County. This is possible because The City of Durham is located in Durham County, but all of Durham County isn't part of the city (though lots of it is).

The school would be based on the county, so in this case, kids would go to Durham County schools.

Indeed. Similarly, my in-laws live in Durham County with a Chapel Hill address. The zoned schools for their neighborhood are Durham public schools.

I think if it's not in city limits the address is based on the closest post office.

Yep, there's actually a bit more of Chapel Hill in Durham County than there is of Raleigh in Durham County.

For a general reference (and to see how small an area we're talking about here) see the maps here: City Limit Map - The Official City of Raleigh Portal
on Raleigh's website. The grey areas are within the city limits, and as shown in the upper left of the map, there are grey areas over the county line (indicated in a bold black line, though not labeled)

Mailing address is based on the USPS Station that services the address.

Raleigh services some addresses in Durham County.

Mailing Address does not indicate governmental body with jurisdiction.

According to the Toll Brothers rep on site there, City of Raleigh DID in fact annex that development. So you'd get city services -- whatever those are.

Your city services are water & sewer & garbage. And street cleaning or snow removal in the event of the rare snow.

But as others have said, schools are based on which county you live in, so in your cause this home would have Durham County Schools.
