We just moved to Raleigh and our yard is brown/dead looking. 90% of the lawns that we have seen look the same way (it's February).

Any suggestions on how I should program our irrigation? I've read 30 minutes every early morning but I am curious what people are doing.

And should I even be doing this in February or when should I start (what seasons or year round?)?

Thanks All!!

It depends on your grass type. Do you know what it is?

If you're in a newer development and all of your neighbors have brown grass, then there's a good chance that you all got a warm season variety. If that's the case, all the watering in the world won't turn your grass green right now. In fact, it will actually hurt the grass to get too much water right now.

That would actually cause for harm than good. Short but frequent intervals would cause shallow root growth. It's best to water once per week delivering 1 inch of water. You'd have to find out how long it takes to deliver 1 inch of water for each section. Simply mark a line 1 inch from the bottom of a soup can. Set it in the yard and turn on the sprinkler system. Time how long it takes for water to fill the can to the 1 inch mark. Do this for each section of the sprinkler system. It's also recommended to water early in the morning as to allow the yard time to dry during the day and to minimize water loss due to evaporation.

The very first thing you need to do is determine the type of grass. Take a couple pictures and post them or simply use a search engine to find pictures of turf grasses to determine which type you have.

Agree with above. A lot of people down here have zoysia or bermuda, which is meant to go dormant in the winter. If it's uniformly brown you can be sure that's how it's supposed to look. You need to find out what you have to care for it properly. Water is pretty expensive here, so you'll not want to water when you aren't supposed to.

Check the City of Raleigh web site for any water restrictions, not sure but I think they have year around restrictions, I water 3 days a week for about 30 - 45 min a zone depending on what time of year it is, I do not start watering unit mid April and stop mid Sept. Also keep in mind water is very costly here, if you do not have a second meter for irrigation then you are paying water and sewer for the lawn. Welcome to Raleigh

You need to run your irrigation system on days you are permitted to pursuant to city watering restrictions, and then only for the amount of time necessary to deliver 1 inch of water to your lawn per week.
