We may be moving to Raleigh NC and are looking into schools for our four kids (15, 10, 6, 4). In the research I've done on greatschools.org, Cary and Apex seem to have the best schools with scores of 9 and 10's. The problem is that I really like some of the houses in Holly Springs but the schools did not get as good of ratings. Can anyone speak to this? Also, and this may be too specific but my oldest plays lacrosse and has been for 3 years. Does anyone know how competitive lacrosse is in the area? I hate to move him if he can't play his favorite sport. Plus he plays hockey and we're pretty much thinking that hockey may fall to the side of the road. Any input would be much appreciated. This is a possible transfer for us but we have the choice to remain where we are. It's just that the quality of life seems so much higher than where we currently live which is north of detroit. The upside is that the schools are all 10's here.

We have a 12 year old and 10 year old in school in Holly Springs (and soon to have a 5 year old). We've been really happy with the schools. I have friends that have kids in HS High and are happy with that one too - so much also depends on your kids.
I'm not sure how much Lacrosse/Hockey there is through the schools but there are LOTS of rec leagues. I've got loads of friend's whos kids play Lacrosse. Hockey is available too - we do have a hockey team here in Raleigh ....again, through different leagues....There are LOADS of sports available here in the Triangle.

Can't answer your questions about HS schools but lacrosse is starting to catch on down here. I think most if not all of the high schools have teams. There are also rec leagues dedicated to lacrosse. If you want info on those shoot me a DM as my DH is into the lacrosse scene down here.

As far as great schools - isn't that based on parent ratings? Better to look at test scores and state report cards.

Thanks for your responses- really appreciate it. Can anyone speak to redistricting in this area? And school options- I looked at the Wake Co School website and for someone whose kids always attended closest schools- seems a little unnerving (simply because we've never experienced something like that). Thanks!

Both my kids go to school in Holly Springs ( 11 yr old and 13 yr old) and the schools are great. Cary, Apex, and Holly Springs are in the same school district - Wake County Public school system (wcpss.net) so the standards are across the board. I'm sure some schools are better than other but I don't have any complaints about the schools here in Holly Springs.

As far as Lacrosse its popular here. I know my son's middle school has a club team through Apex Sports Authority. There is also this lacrosse league here in HS -- Home Page

For Hockey -- if you want Ice Hockey you may have to drive a bit but we do have it here in RTP. If you want roller hockey -- Dream Sports in Apex has a league.

Be aware of great schools when it comes to ratings. I worked for a district here in Arizona and our site principal had the teachers actually go on great schools during a professional development day and write reviews pretending to be parents. Ever since, my opinion of great schools went down a tad.

Lots of information can be found here,

A good place to look about school's and testing etc, could be found here. Just remember, a school is more than a test but it is a place to start.

I live in Holly Springs and my children go to Middle Creek Elementary and we have been very happy there. We have had great teachers and the PTA is wonderful and really involved. I can't say too much about sports, but I do hear a lot of people talk about hockey and many kids in my neighborhood are involved with hockey. Haven't heard too much about lacrosse but that may be because my kids are younger.
