My uncle suggested what he thinks has been causing these booms.
There is a house at the end of Scenic Drive (facing 98) that apparently gets/brings big logs to his back yard (either via delivery or he's driving them in himself). My uncle speculated that the loud booms are caused when the truck raises the bed to let the logs slide out, and because they all come out at once (as opposed to sand/gravel that falls out bit by bit), the back gate of the delivery truck slams shut quickly - and loudly - creating the echoing booms that can be heard in our area.
On some level it makes sense, but I'm certainly no expert at this kind of thing.
The area/location is dead on, but I've heard dump trucks makes those sounds before, and this sounds a LOT more like artillery or a cannon or a BIG 4th of July fireworks report.

I agree - and every time I hear these booms, I think 'cannon'. Certainly doesn't sound like a regular hunting rifle. Much bigger than that. Strange.
The only hunting this time of year is turkey, and I'm not even sure that starts until this weekend? Anyhow, even a turkey load in a 12g isn't THAT loud. Like I said, the land right next to use is leased to a hunting club....so we're all used to the sound of rifles and shotguns coming from less than a 1/2 mile away. This sounds like it's much farther away and MUCH louder.
So strange! We heard one Monday night out by Bedford, scared the mess out of us. It was about 10:30p, shook the house, and really was unlike any sound I can place. It's definitely not from a gun, or a transformer. It was a powerful explosion, whatever it is. I wonder if it is possibly a sonic boom from military jets.

We had a sonic boom here in this area several year ago.....I forget exactly when, but probably about 6 years ago. I had just started to doze off, after midnight when I heard an explosion that made me immediately think that my propane tank had exploded right outside my house. Windows, cabinets, dishes rattled, the entire house shook! I jumped up, grabbed a flashlight and ran outside expecting to see a fire. I saw nothing, but heard dogs barking in the distance. Noticed a few neighbors turning on outdoor lights or shining flashlights around in the dark. Nothing. The next day I go online and see that hundreds and hundreds of people all around Wake and Franklin counties heard it, and it was reported to be a sonic boom.
Ok Grizzmeister... that vid was a little bit unnerving. We may not be living in "end" times, but we sure are living in weird times.
On a distantly related note (no pun intended), the Sun halo helps prove my theory that the universe is not oriented they way it's printed in science books. Another forum, another time for that one.

Sorry, my intention for linking that video was to show that other cities in the US are also hearing loud unexplained booms and not necessarily to alarm anyone.
