I thought that too...until I took 540 to a Durham Bulls game last month. Got the bill in the mail Friday.
Over $5 (round trip) to use 540 from 64 to 147. Obviously that price is going to be higher if people were jumping on 540 at 55 in Holly Springs/Apex.
Personally, I couldn't imagine spending $8 +/- per day just to save 15 minutes.
That is a little much but do you have the quick pass? (or whatever they call it here) Just think of the gas you are saving with smooth sailing to RTP vs stop and go traffic for 45 mins.
No I don't have the quick pass, but I think that only saves 10% (I could be wrong...I only go this way to go to Bulls games, so it's not worth it for me).
Its a personal decision your time vs. money. If it were my daily commute I would do the math but 55 is a straight shot (albeit with traffic), while 540 is a loop. So there is a gas savings for drivng vs. stop and go, but you are also driving more miles by taking 540, which cuts into that. At $3.90/gallon, I don't think I'm wasting 2 gallons idling.
