Yes, mosquitoes and yes, absolutely year round. In our part of the NC, heart worm preventative should never be stopped. No excuses or cutting corners should be considered.

Heart worms live inside the heart, lungs, larger blood vessels and even internal organs. Round, tape, hook or whip worms are intestinal parasites.

I hope this link is okay as it explains how dangerous heart worms are.

I don't like the cost but we use Interceptor and purchase it online after getting tested and a prescription from our vet. One of our dogs is a herding breed which makes me afraid to try Invermectin. I like that Interceptor prevents against other types of worms, including whipworms which even Heartguard does not. Wish there was a generic though! We do buy the generic 'frontline plus' for fleas from WalMart and it seems to work well.
