I wish Carrboro wasn't so far away from me because I've heard great things about that place. Which is funny, because I used to live in a town where we would regularly travel at least 30 minutes to do anything, but somehow spending 30 minutes on a train wasn't nearly as bothersome as a 30-minute drive.
I don't think there's a fascination, it's just the only "premium" lunch meat that's widely distributed down here. I'm sure if Hebrew National or something started pushing into the market they would do just fine.
Dada Bing. Real NY Deli with real NY people and Boarshead meat. Real NY bagels. Ya got it folks? Real NY.
It's funny how people define "Real NY". If I see "Boars Head Meat", I roll my eyes and say, "That's not a real deli - that's a grocery store sandwich." Different strokes...

Problem is it's not feasible to get something other than Boar's Head out here for most restaurants because of how the distributor system works. If people started writing to their favorite deli meat company demanding it be sold in the Triangle, perhaps the show of demand would get those companies to expand to distributors that operate in this area. Until then Boar's Head is the only national brand you'll really find here. I was surprised that NYBD III carries National Hebrew and Sabrett pastrami but when I asked the owner he said that was a special order he has to do.
There are a few places that cure their own deli meats. I find them to be most favorable. (Doesn't help with grocery shopping, but makes for a nice deli sammich when out.) I think the big difference is the lack of whatever it takes to package deli meat for longevity. Even Boars Head or Sabrett has to do this, hence the preference to "house cured".
I've been wanting to try Neal's, and also, as mentioned, was fairly impressed with the Reuben at Rudy's in Apex. (Not a "10", but still very good.)
You know, this Boars Head monopoly was one of the first things I noticed here.
I actually had a manager at Food Lion proudly tell me "Everything in the store is from the largest corporations in America".
I didn't have the heart to tell him that that's not how it works.
