If your husband works in Morrisville I would check out the schools in Chapel Hill, West Cary & Apex. Specifically: Olive Chapel in Apex; Mills Park, Highcroft, Green Hope & Davis Drive Elementary in Cary; and any elementary school that sets you up for East Chapel Hill High School.

Taking a tour, attending open houses, talking to parents of students and make sure the school meets your baseline on testing ... those are my suggestions.

Here's my story and opinions... 2 in Olive Chapel ES in Apex, great experience. Middle and high school feeder schools are good for OCE. Applied for Washington ES magnet based on program offerings, teachers and tour of school. Rising 6th grader accepted at Ligon Magnet MS. Great AG (academically-gifted) program, awesome electives, teachers seem excited, school tour A+. Selected Ligon over Carnage even when Carnage offered transportation.

If you are interested in Magnet schools in Wake County... take a look at Washington Elementary; also Fuller or Hunter if you have children you believe are academically gifted.

The comments I am making are based on a long-term plan, just stick it out wherever you are for this school year. Wake County (wcpss) went through a major overhaul of school assignment this year in order to offer parents more stability in the long-term (constant reassignments plagued the county in the past). In order to have the best shot at the school you want in wake county, move within 1 to 1.2 miles of the school you want to attend. This gives you the highest priority (other than having a sibling at the school), given you are new to the system.

If you are thinking of Wake County, make sure you check out the feeder schools for your proposed ES before choosing. Once you make a choice you are kind of "locked in" to that path. Most good schools don't have any additional capacity to offer a spot to someone who wants to switch feeder patterns. If you google wcpss feeder patterns and look for the pdf that the board approved on 10-18-11 that should be the right one for the 12-13 year.

Good luck.
