Stupid question, I know. We have a VERY specific need here, though. It has to be a maximum of 10in rough in distance. In other words, a very shallow back. We need it to be in stock, and as cheap as possible.
I figured big box...are lowe's/hd the only options? I don't even really know where to buy toilets. Ugh. Not what we wanted to be doing!! I'm not about to go used given how specific our needs are-we need an extremely easy return policy for the "just in case" it gets here and doesn't fit the space (we would know before install-not planning to return an icky toilet or anything!). I think it would be harder to get all the specs on a used toilet.
For in stock & cheap I also would think Home Depot or Lowes.
Maybe call a couple local plumbers? Of course a smaller company probably won't have them in stock. But you won't know for sure unless you call.
If you are in Durham there is rebate program. We got $100 credit on our water bill when we bought our last toilet. Assuming what ever you buy is one of the new efficient ones you may qualify. Durham, NC - City of Medicine
Is it an option to install an offset flange in the floor and then a standard 12" roughin toilet? How to Install an Offset Toilet Flange | eHow.com
You should easily be able to locate an offset flange at a plumbing specialty shop like Ferguson's. And they may also handle the 10" roughin toilet.
Their prices are not necessarily lower and they tend to sell seconds.
Go to one of the stores that the professional plumbers use. Not only will they have prices very similar, if not the same as the big box stores, but they only sell first quality, and they will special order your short rough-in toilet.
Try going to a Big Box and asking for a 10-inch rough-in toilet. You will get blank stares, confused looks, and statements that they only sell toilets that mate to 3-1/2 inch piping.
Strong recommendation for the American Standard Cadet 3, which is a top choice from Consumer Reports and one we have been very happy with. We got most of our fixtures from Ferguson, Wilkinson and other local companies, but we bought the toilets from Home Depot and were fine with it. We had a slightly unusual rough-in measurement (this was a 1920s house we rehabbed) and HD had no trouble ordering the right one for us.
