Hello OP, according to your criteria I think there are several places you could stay. As the other posters have stated there is Morrisville, Brier Creek, Southpoint, and downtown Durham. IMO, I think you should check out downtown Durham and the surrounding areas. Downtown proper you have West Village, Baldwin Lofts, American Tobacco Apts. Surrounding areas: Ninth street (Station Nine) and even Erwin Rd. (Lofts at Lakeview, Erwin Terrace, Trinity Commons). Downtown Durham and Ninth street will give you the most urban feel in Durham and Erwin Rd is more commercial/chain restaurants but all in walking distance. I would also say check out Golden Belt Apts. on the outskirts of downtown Durham. Morrisville, Brier Creek and Southpoint are nice area, but suburban and my not be what you're completely looking in a "downtown" feeling area, although they will contain all the amenities you requested (just not as walkable). Good luck.
Heck 30 minutes you could live just about anywhere. Give downtown Durham a look. Considering my commute from Cary to Durham is less than 30 minutes there's no way it would take more than 30 minutes to get to Davis Drive from downtown Durham.
