I've read a lot about the oppressive summer heat and humidity in Raleigh. Living in Phoenix has certainly exposed me to the heat with some humidity during monsoon season. Spending most of my life in Pa I understand just how uncomfortable humidity can be, but highs in the upper 90's were uncommon.

With that said, what are the summer nights like?

Around here summer is brutal, day and night. there are nights the temperatures do not come out of the 90's. There is nothing quite like opening the door at 5am to have heat come blasting in. When the sun comes up you are back to triple digits by 8a. It never cools off here during the summer. Even taking a night drive you can't roll the windows down...well, i can't anyway...

The Raleigh weather history shows lows in the 60s and 70s during the summer. This looks like it would offer a reprieve from the heat at night and in early morning. Is this accurate?

I can only compare my experience while in Pennsylvania during heat waves. The days were hot, humid and in the 90's but it cooled off fast after the sun went down. It wouldn't get to be unbearable until around noon. Is this description accurate for the Triangle area?

Yes, some limited reprieve from the heat - but it will be a slow cool down long after the sun sets. But no reprieve from the humidity. Mornings can be a soggy mess. You won't be opening your doors and windows in the evenings (or mornings) here during the summer.

Late nights it can cool down here a little bit in the summer. But as soon as the sun thinks about rising it'll become muggy and gross. But I do think it's possible to sit outside at night and enjoy a drink without wanting to die haha.

ha! I walk outside in the morning here after being in my air conditioned house and immediately start swearing. Anything has got to be an improvement over this!

There will be many nights where it feels nice the next morning, but plenty where it will be 80 at 6 am and humid as heck too.

Yeah I think you'll be fine because it's all relative. If you're used to bad heat and humidity, it won't seem so bad here. I remember when I moved to Kyoto, which has the same climate as Raleigh in the summer, my coworkers from Michigan were acting like they were going to literally drop dead in the street from the heat and humidity. Meanwhile myself and my coworker from Georgia were like, "Y'all are crazy, this isn't even that hot."

I'm from Tucson, just to give you an idea of where I'm coming from with my answer. It gets hot here but even with the humidity I don't find it nearly as oppressive. In Tucson the sun was much more intense, even early in the morning and my skin would feel like it was cooking. I haven't felt that here. The high humid days can take their toll but I find its really only been a problem for a few weeks rather than a few months. We spend more time outside in the summer here than we ever did in Tucson! For us its been a great change. This will be my third full summer here.

I certainly value your opinion with your location history. I'm hoping to get back to being outside as well. Many people do fine with Arizona heat, I'm not one of them. The sun here is down right angry, I can't wait to get back to a place where a sunny day doesn't make me wince a little

Would you be willing to post any other comparisons between the two regions? I'm very interested to hear the opinions of folks that moved from Arizona to North Carolina.

THANK YOU!

For us its been a wonderful change! The cons being mostly lack of sonoran style Mexican food, lots of rain (not a bad thing just takes getting used to for us), and the winters could be a little more sunny but usually we get some sun after a few days at most. But the pros are huge! Its not nearly as dusty. There are actual seasons. And we've found the area to be much more family friendly - that's not to say Tucson wasn't its just even more here. This has been a great change for us.

That's sort of a generic post so feel free to ask more specifics if you want!

generic, but very informative. If you wouldn't mind me eventually asking some questions please accept my "friend request" here on C-D.

I can only think of two questions really. Where there any big surprises moving there (taxes, culture, shopping, etc.), and besides friends families and Filly B's what do you miss most of Az?

I can't wait for rain!
