We are self employed and looking to relocate to NC. I need a little help on where to get started!

Here are the criteria:

Good school system (no busing or corporal punishment--before you balk-- that is still legal in many states, including NC)
Very Low Crime
Good Health Index (not near any nuclear power plants, super fund sites, etc.)
Within 1.5 hours of decent airport
Ability to purchase at least 10 acres under 500K

I was hoping to generate some suggestions so I may begin researching.

Thank you in advance for all of your help!

Are you specifically looking in the Triangle region, or anywhere in the state?

I would say close to the triangle region due to the proximity of the universities.

Numerous properties in Orange county fit your criteria.

In particular, search in the Grady Brown elementary school zone.

Although I must admit that "10 acres" and "no busing" causes a giggle. You looking for a 10 acre property in a walk zone?

Check out landwatch.com. We found a 25 acre property in northern Durham for a very reasonable price, well below your budget. Orange, Durham, and Person counties all have properties available within a relatively easy driving distance to all areas of the Triangle and the airport.

All the school systems utilize busing. You can certainly choose to drive your child to school, but there are no school systems in the triangle w/o buses. There are some private schools and charters w/o buses.

I have to agree with toot68 that trying to find 10 acres in the walk zone is going to be pretty difficult. And if you were to find it for the elementary school, what about middle school and high school?

Shearon Harris nuclear power plant is located in the triangle. How close is too close? Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I think I might need to clarify "no busing".

According to Merriam Webster busing is defined as:

"transporting of children to a school outside their residential area as a means of achieving racial balance in that school"

I hear that happens in NC.

I want my kids to go to a local school. Not be on a bus for 45 minutes!!!

Newsflash. The "local" school zones for most 10 acre+ properties at a price point of less than 500K are going to be rural, and on the order of a hundred or more square miles. For instance, the above mentioned Grady Brown Elementary school draws from the southwestern corner of Orange county, extending roughly 10 miles to the west and 12 miles to the south. If you live in the southwest corner of the county, where you'll be a 10 minute drive from chapel hill and where there are some beautiful homes of the type you are looking for, your kid will be on the bus for 45 min.

I think that your Webster definition might only be applying to the Wake County school district but those issues and their recent changes are very confusing so who knows. You wouldn't have to worry about that in the other counties. Check out the numerous threads on the Wake County schools and you will get a better idea.

Thank you Im_Walters, that is the mess I am referring to! I didn't know if other school districts did the same thing.
