And to the original poster, I agee, would report to police but not file insurance, probably less than your deductible.
My Corolla has a chip key that must be used to start the car. Even pulling the lock cylinder won't defeat it.

Sorry this happened to you...similar thing happened to my father's birthday present. He left it in his car unlocked right in front of the house. They live in a pretty quiet neighborhood, and some kids stole it.

I'd just chalk it up to experience...it sucks, but make sure you lock up next time, and shove your gps in the console. It was an easy steal, and next time, you'll just make it a little less easy for them!

WWYD? should I call the town police and file a report? Should I bother to file an insurance claim? Or just chalk it up to experience?
Having to make some assumptions here, but if it was a portable unit like a Garmin on top of your dash or on the windshield, I'd chalk it up to experience unfortunately. Even if it was a built in Subie nav system, I assuming not, it was 8 years old and not worth much now. You can file with the police, but the odds anything will come of it seem highly unlikely, frankly the police shouldn't be working on recovering something that can be replaced new for $100-150 IMO. It's not worth alerting insurance IMO.

I'd buy a new GPS and never leave it out in today's world. I never left my Garmin out anywhere, at the very least I'd pop it off the dash and put it in the passengers footwell when I didn't want to put it away altogether. We never leave anything laying loose in our car, we even put away sunglasses just so thieves aren't tempted to break in.

You certainly didn't deserve to be robbed, but these things happen nowadays unfortunately.
