I have seen many good size Bass taken from the shore at the lake that is in Apex communtiy park. Lots of friendly people and families walking the trail around the lake. Also very east to get to. Just off 64 a couple miles from US1.

And a nice floating dock.
I haven't fished there, but spoke with a fellow who takes his boy there because they have never been skunked, and catching something is important to entertain a little guy.

I used to fish at the main lake in Umstead, the one you access off hwy 70. They drained that lake to clean it up years ago, and then restocked it. The bass used to be plentiful and somewhat easy to catch in there, from shore. But I haven't fished there in years. Be careful of places where you hike in, or stand on the actual shoreline, snakes are very plentiful and with the high temps, they are out and about right now, especially around water. A lot of the local apartment complex or neighborhood ponds have fish, and many are not heavily fished. Those can be worth a shot to if you know someone who lives there.

Places I shore fished over the years without any success include Crabtree Lake, Durant Lake, and Bond Park Lake. There are nice fish in Bond Park Lake, but I've never seen them caught from the shallow end shoreline, you need to rent a boat and get out close to the dam.

All I ever caught at Crabtree was catfish. Fun to catch and release, but with the PCBs, I wouldn't eat anything from the lake anyway.
An 8 year old needs a catch he can eat.

Apex Community park has a lot of fishing for families... I see Dads with kids all the time. Nice dock there (as mentioned previously) it's families, pretty quiet, parking and safe. Have fun! 64 to Lake Pine and the park is down on the left...

I think a license is required now even for live bait in your own county ...
Private ponds are the exception to needing a license.

Not totally sure but I think under 16 can fish without a license.

July 4th is a day when no license is required..

We go to Bass Lake in Holly Springs. We always throw our fish right back in. You can even buy your live bait right there...
