When I looked into it, I found that most organized sports programs were for 4+ year old kids. Hockey starts younger than most other sports. But we found that the typical soccer/baseball programs wanted kids who were almost 5.

Check out the Y for your area I know Johnston county has soccer starting at 3 through their Ymca so I would assume the apex/Cary would as well.

There is a sports-themed class at the Little Gym in Holly Springs. My son participated for a year and it helped hiim with confidence to move into other organized sports.

The Town of Cary has fitness classes geared specifically towards toddlers and preschoolers you might want to check out. You can find info in their catalog: http://www.townofcary.org/Assets/Parks$!2c+Recreation+and+Cultural+Resources+Depart ment/Program+Brochure/Current/bbpages.pdf

City of Raleigh has classes through Parks and Rec. My 3 year old son has taken basketball, football, and now baseball. It's nothing major - basically teaching skills, rules, sportsmanship, and listening skills - but we think it's a good preface for organized sports when he's older.

You really can't go wrong with gymnastics for 3 year olds. Lots of things to bounce on and they learn to wait their turn.

Swimming lessons at the pool near Cary Town Center mall.
Tiger tots classes at White Tiger TKD. We really liked Mike, the instructor.
Dreamsports in Apex--rollerblading classes, soccer, base ball.

Given his age and the probability that he won't fully comprehend the idea of team sports yet, I'd put him in something like swimming lessons. It will be fun for him and is a useful thing for him to be able to do...it could even save his life some day.
