I live in a quiet, fairly affluent and small community just outside of Fairfield County in CT. Although it is very safe and the schools are great, I feel the guardedness, rigidity and sense of entitlement from the high achieving, wealthy, BMW driving CFO's that seem to blanket this region of the country. People that will cordially nod their heads at you with little or no concern for daily kindness. It's really a shame that an area filled with high IQ's, have really low EQ's (Emotional Quotient). I can't believe how difficult it is for people to be pleasant up here. Please tell me it is more relaxed down there, because despite my willingness to take a significant pay cut, I would gladly do it to be free from the cerebral, status-oriented, did-you-recycle-your-cardboard too communities that are filled with high achieving but very lonely and anxiety-filled people that believe their families and issues are at the center of the universe.

Byron,

I can tell you as a Yankee transplant that this place is truly a melting pot. The people you meet in the Raleigh area will mostly be transplants also! When I moved to Raleigh 10 years ago, I worked with NC Natives! It took me a long time to get their respect but I did it. Initially they didn't want me here. I was a NY Yankee and they had no use for me. They were mean and rude but I stuck to my guns!! When I showed them I was a good person, showed genuine interest in them and their families well being, they warmed up! It's the same everywhere man. If you are genuine to the people you meet and they still are stand-offish! Move on!! You don't need them! Thats people in general!!

"People are strange......When your a stranger!"

I have met many rude transplants but all NC Natives have shown to be great people in the long run. NC is a great place and so are its people!!.......The ones who want to be!!

Coming to NC from the NE (Vermont to be exact) was quite the eye opener for me. I would say that it's such a melting pot and I've met more transplants like myself that I haven't noticed a huge difference.

SOME Southerners do have a different definition of 'nice' in that 'Southern Hospitality' sort of way..sweetness and light to your face but not sincere.
I'm more about straightforward realness, but to many here, that's rude...I guess it's just your personal preference!
