I'm looking for a store that sells all the misc electric and electronic parts. Like Radio Shack (without the consumer electronics), and x 10,000
I've lived in other cities that had a store that had a bunch of tables with all sorts of bins, for all the different kinds of wire, of every type of power, data, or computer connectors, of small and large motors, fans, etc.
Does anyone know of such a place here that will sell retail?
(My specific need is a plug and jack to be used to replace the loose-run power wire from my car's cigarette outlet to my GPS, and the jack needs to be 12V (but low power, maybe 5 amp fused?), surface-mount, low profile to be mounted inside the headliner.)
I remember the good old days when there were several in Raleigh, but unfortunately, don't believe there is any such place around here any more. Here is one list, but nothing really on it. Ham Radio Related Businesses - Research Triangle Area - North Carolina For electronic components and connectors and such, online is the only real option I know of.
It sure seems like some place like Fry's would do great around here. Don't even know if Fry's carries wire and components in their stores anymore, as it has been many years since I have been to one.
Don't know what kind of socket you are looking for, but if you want a cigarette lighter type socket, then the boat stores like West Marine and Overtons usually have them.

There are no Fry's here or anywhere close. Unless you luck up and find it at RS (and pay way too much for it), ordering online is the only option. For cables and similar, monoprice.com is the best. For other electronics, there is Mouser, Allied Electronics, Newark and others. Some hobbys, like pinball/coin-op have folks that specialize in those parts and offer an alternative to the big guys just mentioned.
You have slim pickings for a local store that actually carries electrical components. The only local place that has never disappointed me when it comes to having a part I need is Trader Joe's in Wake Forest. He's an avid hammer who has a shop behind his house. His hours are limited but I doubt you'll be disappointed with the visit. The shop is open from 6-9pm M-F & 10am-2pm on Sat.
