Oh my. The Durham taquerias. Of the four or five mentioned in Gourmet magazine and the Chowhound article, I've been to three.
Taqueria La Vaquita - 2700 Chapel Hill Rd, Durham - my favorite so far, not just because I live about 10 minutes away...but these are the best tacos I've ever had. Just over three bucks for two, it comes with radishes, lime and salsa verde. Really a takeout stand, they have two small tables outside the stand.
Taqueria Lopez - 3438 Hillsborough Rd - Durham, NC 27705 - would be my favorite but their cleanliness score was a 90 I think, and it showed. However, delicious food, so I hope they clean up their act.
Los Comales - 2103 N Roxboro St - Durham, NC 27704 - the place is immaculate and they advertise charbroiled beef ... the beef was very good, though not as flavorful as the others. Nice fixings bar.
I only get asada tacos so I can't rate anything else, but I saw some guys get tortas at La Vaquita and they looked amazing.
Durham haters/fearers - make the trip anyway! Totally worth it.
I lived in Texas for several years so it is kind of hard not to be TexMex and Mexican food snob.
Yup I could see that - in fact I hated Mexican food most of my life but I'd never had anything beyond chain tex mex or taco bell. Now that I've had the real deal (not tex mex I think, right?) I'm obsessed.
Would like to go to a tex mex place that's not a chain and is genuinely good...do we have any here?

Or they could just leave more tacos for us. Yes, totally worth it. I lived in Texas, too, on the border, and am happy-happy (that's double happy) to have that food culture here at home in Durham.

wow I would have gained 100 lbs living on the border in Texas - :-D

Heh!
Well, we really like El Rodeo for regular-old-family-dinner. I don't love Banditos either.
I think one thing you run into with the restaurants (and probably the taquerias) is that they are not all "Mexican"--plenty of other Latin American countries represented in the Triangle, and I guess the recipes are a little different (so people will love/hate different restaurants).
Hey, I'm feeding picky kid eaters. Sometimes a room full of televisions, drinks with lids, and bland quesadillas are right on target. But they also make chilaquiles for me even tho they aren't on the menu anymore, so they have my heart.
