I can deal with snakes, bees, wasps even though I'm allergic... but spiders - not. Found this in my garage today. took some pix and trapped it. Did some searching found IDs from a redback to black widow. Only in NC a year and this is my first meeting, so would appreciate the help

Looks like a black widow to me. Nothing to freak out about, they are everywhere, and yet you'll hardly ever see them.

Don't black widows have the hourglass on the bottom? I suppose there could be varieties of them with spots on top though. I agree it's shaped like a black widow.

Aha! This is the answer. It is a "northen" black widow. Or perhaps the "Red widow"

Thanks all. Black widow it was. Most webs in the garage have the actual spider in the web, but these did not. I found another web with no spider in it. Looked around near it for hiding place and found an even bigger one, sprayed it, and this was the classic black widow with nothing on the back, but the red hourglass underneath. I sprayed the one I posted and it also had the red hourglass, though also the red on it's back. Maybe male and female?

Anyway I have some pretty big gaps in the rubber garage door seal, I need to fix that. Luckily these guys are nocturnal, so only way to find'em is to go poking around.
