I was talking about Devereux Meadows, not Dorothea Dix I'm not holding my breath on the state selling the Dix property to Raleigh.
Yes, this thread is about Devereux Meadows, not Dorothea Dix. I think some confusion came into the discussion when some videos about DD were introduced. (But I love the park proposal for Dix too! )
Nothing wrong with borrowing the best of worlds to continue improving our city.. I think every city should have some kind of water scenery around which people can gather and enjoy at all times of day and night. I also think we should have beautiful drinking fountains in every plaza, and all bridges should be lit up at night.
Why is everyone always trying to make Raleigh just like "some other place" instead of enjoying it for what it is?
I was thinking about it as if I was a visitor coming to town for a conference. If I am staying at the Marriott next to the convention center for three nights and don't a have a car, what is there for me to do? Many cities have an area downtown that is convention friendly. While downtown Raleigh has made improvements, such as the amphitheater, if I was not a resident, I can't say I would look forward to coming here for a conference.
Have you actually been downtown on a Saturday night? Head out to Chuck's or the Remedy Diner, or the Lincoln...all w/in walking distance of the Marriott...there are plenty of people out and about! They don't seem to be complaining about the lack of a river.

Most conventions are scheduled during the week as business travelers like to be home on the weekend. I am fine with Raleigh as it is. However, if it wants to be a player in the convention business, it should consider how to make it more attractive to those travelers.
I agree. But I don't know if a Riverwalk is the end all be all with regards to convention travellers. Since we don't have a river near downtown Raleigh I think expectations for a riverwalk are somewhat out of place. The proposed plan was to expand a nearby creek. A creek by the way which is on the entire opposite side of downtown than where the convention center and major hotels are located.
I like a Riverwalk as much as the next guy, but I don't see it being a major player in a city that isn't located off a river.

Raleigh has one of the busiest convention centers for it's capacity size in the nation. I don't think they're too worried about it.
I LOVE the idea of a waterway in Raleigh. As much as I hated Houston, The Woodlands (a suburb of Houston) had the coolest waterway. It was designed from an expanded drainage ditch. Surely if they could do that without an existing river, we could do something similar.
