Hello all,

I am concerned with schools. I have a child entering the second grade in the fall who is very bright. I want her to go to the best school. She is currently reading at a 4th grade level. What area would you suggest we move? Of course, I would like to relocate to a good, dafe neighborhood that is not expensive. Where should we look for APTS (2 or 3 bedrooms with a lot of space)?

Lastly, I am looking for employment as a therapist. Anyone know of any places to apply?

If we can, we would preferrably like to be near the airport or the highway.

Thank you for your help!

I've heard that Morrisville elementary school is a very good school, as far as test scores are concerned. But I wouldn't base my decision solely on test scores.

There are apartment complexes up and down Morrisville Parkway, and these would be within walking distance of that school.

The airport is no more than a 10 minute drive from this area too.

As far as therapist jobs are concerned, you'll need to be more specific. What kind of therapist? Mental or physical? If physical. . . are you interested in speech, occupational, physical, etc?

Hi trinitee,

Kind of a vague description of what you're looking for. You'd probably need to provide more specific info for the folks on this forum to give useful tips.

I want her to go to the best school.
Is that public or private? Really lots of choices in the Triangle area. As you go through the threads on this forum, there are lots of discussions regardign the school systems. Generally, the concensus seems to be that overall the Wake County school system is good. Not much concern about "bad" schools. They also have magnet schools...might be an option for your gifted child. Chapel Hill schools are also something to consider.

I would like to relocate to a good, dafe neighborhood that is not expensive.
Are you totally sold on Raleigh? How about neighboring towns/counties? What's your price range? Strictly apartment/townhomes or single-family or other? Do you have to consider work commute in considering an area?

Also, some Wake County schools have issues w/ overcrowding/bussing/redistricting that you may want to consider. Your child may not end up in the school closest to you.

Sorry, I haven't really answered your question at all, but it seems that there are so many choices in this area, that you'd really need to get specific about your criteria and focus on just a few areas, otherwise your head is gonna start to spin from all the options.

BTW - curiuos about your screen name. Are you from Hawaii? (area code "808")?

I am looking for a public school right now. I will consider private schools next year. My daughter is currently 6 and reads at a 4th grade level. She enjoys art and music. I also have a 2 year old that I will need to place in day care after acquiring a job.

In terms of employment, I am looking for a position as a mental health/pyschgotherapist. My degree is in Marriage and Family Therapy and I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults individually, as couples, families, and in groups. I have also worked with court mandated as well as self referred clients and collaborated with other mental health professionals, DCF/ChildNet Advocates, probations officers, other legal entities to construct therapy.

In terms of living, I would like to pay under 800/month. We are open to other neighboring areas but not more than 25 minutes from the airport. If we can get a single family home, that would be ideal. We are looking for apartments, townhomes, or single family homes.

I hope this is a little more specific. Thanks for all your help.

Red face Have you made the move?

Are you from HI? I just moved here from HI and the schools here are 100x better here than in HI; that's why we moved. If your daughter in on 4th grade level in HI, that doesn't exactly mean that it's true for other states standards. My daughter was also above grade level in HI, but is just an average student here. Hope that helps some.

I think you'll be fine in most schools in the area. My daughter is in first grade and reads on a 4th grade level. We stayed in our regular, base elementary which isn't the *greatest* school out there, but they still find plenty of ways to keep her reading on her own level. The kids are tested regularly and given books to read on their appropriate level, so I wouldn't worry too much about your child not getting appropriate reading material.
As fo rjobs in your field, if you are not in private practice, I suggest you peruse the NC state government website as well as the Wake County website. I know there are several places they hire therapists.

Since your concerns are A. good elementary school, and B. close to the airport, I think your best bet would be the Morrisville/West Cary area. The schools in this area are excellent. One of the best elementary school in Wake county is Davis Drive Elem., as far as I know, the only commercial apartment complex to which Davis Dr. is assigned as base school is Cornerstone Apt near the intersection of Davis Drive and High House Rd. There are more apartments around Morrisville Elem., which is also an excellent school (my son went there so I know). The difference is that Davis Drive Elem operates on a traditional callendar, whereas Morrisville Elem operates on a year-round callender--in case you have a perfernece in that. There are other great schools nearby as well, both highcroft and salem are almost brand-new... Let me know if you need more information.

I would also look into NW Raleigh, like Leesville.
