My route to NVa is I85N to Petersburgh to I95 South (just a couple of miles) to I295 and back to I95N . While its a bit longer than straight up I95N through Richmond, even w/o traffic it's often quicker as the speed limit is more sensible. The road is in better shape too.

I did the drive between Raleigh and NOVA every weekend and the traffic can be frustrating but it does continue to move through Richmond. The backups seemed to happen when I295 merges into I95.

The route I used was 85N to 95N, just past Petersburg route 10 will take you over to 295, and then back up to 95N. Route 10 is an easy quick little shortcut, that usually has pretty good gas prices and food.

I got stuck in Richmond once when they had construction bumping three lanes north bound on 95 into just ONE LANE. It was miserable... Took us three hours to get through Richmond. I now take 295 around Richmond every time, just to be safe.

Y'all have me convinced that 295 is, on average, a safer bet. Looks like I'll be able to cut over on 460 to 295N and then join back up with 95N north of Richmond.

Yeah, I do this trip every week and rarely find any problems going through Richmond, even through rush hour. The only difficulty I am seeing now is if you go through Richmond after 7pm at night. They are fixing a bridge and that creates a bottleneck when three lanes become 1. During the day traffic is fine.

Route 522 is not bad if you are not in a hurry. There are a few towns along the way (like Mineral) and it is only 2 lanes. If you make it to Richmond by 4 PM you should be fine.

We're leaving Wake Forest at 3:30pm on travel day, so there is no way to hit Richmond by 4.

Rush hour should be nearly over by the time you get to Richmond then. You shouldn't have any issues unless there is an accident.

I can monitor google and waze for traffic. Are you saying my best bet is still 95N all the way, then, rather than 295? I've never taken 295N so maybe it's worthwhile just to check it out.

295 is not really exciting LOL. its just long stretches of highway like 95. but if you want to then go for it
