I'm volunteering the next three days at the American Cheese Society festival. The volunteer info says we have to cover our own parking and suggested several nearby spots.

I would appreciate any suggestion on the best place to park. Easiest to get into and out of. Best all day rates.

Thanks.

I know, I should have read the fine print earlier. I just never imagined that they would expect a person to pay to volunteer.

Oh, well. Live and learn.

You might be able to park on the street across from the Amtrak station (W. Cabarrus St. and S. West St. area). It is only a couple of blocks' walk to the convention center. Be sure to pay close attention to the parking signs to know which sections of curb are fair game. There are no meters there, and I've seen cars parked there for several days when the Amtrak lot is full.

Park farther out and take the R Line

LibrarySue, thank you. I'll check out around the Amtrak. No idea about the R-Line or where to park and catch it, so guess for this first day I'll either find a spot around the Amtrak or pay at one of the lots.

Park on N. Boylan Ave, anywhere north of Hillsborough St and south of Peace St. As long as you find a legal spot, it's free all day. Then walk one block to the east to Glenwood Ave and catch the R-Line. The R-Line turns onto Glenwood at Tucker St, so if you parked north of Tucker St, be sure to come back south far enough to catch the R-Line, which will take you right to the Convention Center.

If there's no parking available on Boylan Ave, drive around the side streets. There's on-street parking there, too. Just don't park on Glenwood Avenue, because the parking is metered there (2 hour max).

I'm also pretty sure the deck accross from the Lincoln Theater (Martin Street?) is free on the weekends. At least it is at night. About a five to ten minute walk.

Here is the website for the R-Line (it's free to ride): Get Around :: R-LINE :: Downtown Raleigh

I'm still pretty sure that your best bed is W. Cabarrus. That area doesn't get as much constant traffic as the others mentioned, so I would think you would have a pretty good chance of finding a spot.

All street parking downtown is free on the weekends and after 5pm on weekdays.
