We split the cost of renting an aerator with our neighbors (less than $15) and bought a $50 bag of seed/fertilizer to rake and spread ourselves.

I had someone come and do my 1/5 acre lot two weeks ago. They aerated, overseeded and fertilized for $175. They did a very good job, were very professional, and were done in about 45 minutes (four guys, two in the front and two in the back yards).

Having never done it myself and having heard horror stories about brown spots due to overfertilizing, I decided to pay this year. It was worth it, IMHO.

BTW, there is now plenty of baby grass coming up, even in our bare spots.
